T.I.P Decorating Guide : Balcony Makeovers #1

type='html'>
Micheli Design
You may think that a small balcony does not give you an opportunity for too many possibilities in terms of beautifying the space, but that is not the case. A few additions and you will have an inviting balcony. The first step is to decide on some kind of theme. It could be a season or it could be a certain kind of look you would like. Once you have that in mind, the rest will come more easily.
Anya Hoffman
Painting the wall of your balcony in a bright colour to match your theme would liven the space. You could paint the wood trims, mouldings and railing in a contrast colour as well. The second step is to focus on the most obvious way to liven up a balcony—plants. This is the most important exercise when you plan on decorating your balcony. You could pick out the space for potted plants, as well as some additions like a trellis, climbers and hanging planters. Choose the plants according to the kind of look you want. Since floor space is limited pay a lot of attention to vertical space and use it the best way you can. It does not matter if you have a great view, as long as the space looks inviting. Plants should be used in various levels all around the balcony instead of just having a row of potted plants. Levels will also make the space look much bigger than it is, while adding colour vertically.

T.I.P Decorating Guide : Kitchen Design Makeovers #2

I am outlining below some basic tips which can be achieved at a fairly low cost. If your budget permits you could even splurge on some aspects and budget on the rest. Whichever way works for you. The point to remember is to conceive a look which would be significantly different from the existing one. Where everything fits into a storyboard and you forget the jigsaw puzzle that was.
Diggers List

Paint your cabinets in a different colour or polish them in a different finish, to give the kitchen a completely different look. You can use a combination of two colours to liven up that space, or even get some borders and colourful motifs on the panels.
Linda Carole
Adding an interesting moulding on the cabinetry would transform the entire kitchen as would changing the handles and knobs. It is fairly simple to do and achieves the change at a low cost. You could choose from a wide variety of options available at the sanitaryware store, which range from colourful accents to ornate handles.

Country Living
Turn one cabinet into a display by replacing the door with a glass one, installing a light fixture inside and displaying some nice crockery or a decorative jar. Do not forget to paint the walls in the kitchen in a completely different colour as well, to complement your new cabinets and complete the picture.

Modern Mediterranean Decorating

type='html'>Mediterranean houses are big here in California.  The problem is many of them are done terribly.  Quite often you see these large, sometime huge, faux Mediterranean tract homes with matching furniture set, heavy draping, granite counter tops--and once you see one house you see them all. They all look the same!

You only have to watch Real Housewives of Orange County to know what we're talking about.

So we were so happy to stumble upon a beautiful house in Santa Monica while browsing for real estate (just for fun, mind you).  Here is a great Mediteranean home that's done right.  See how the furniture is light, nothing is matchy matchy, and the colors are so fun and bright?

PS And just in case you are curious, the house is for sale for $3.795M.  That's California for you!

Inspirational Decorating Photos

type='html'>We would like to make a little announcement today. A few months back we announced the launch of Digging Decor, which originally was conceived as a design blog.

As the months went by, we decided the better approach was to re-design it as a  decorating community site, with the focus on decorating photos.

If you're anything like us, you rather look at the pictures than read the text, right?  The goal for the site is to be the largest library of decorating photos, all well-indexed and well-categorized for easy searching with proper credit given to the original source.

We hate to toot our own horn, but the site is quite lovely and quite sleek.  In addition to having tons of pictures, you can also join the community to ask fellow members questions like-- how to do this, where to find what etc.  You can also post your own blog, upload picture of your favorite room, and get updated on deals and designed-related events.

We would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it if you come visit the site, and better yet, be a part of our community and submit your favorite decorating photos.  Thanks in advance!

KITCHEN DECORATING IDEAS FOR 2010

type='html'>Are you thinking of redecorating your kitchen for the new year? Listed below are some great kitchen decorating ideas you can use for 2010 to bring life to the room you spend the most time in:

Use bright bold colors - Kitchens are the one place where you can use bright reds, greens, yellows, and blues and get away with it. If you try to use those colors for a dining or living area, they probably will not look good at all. But if you want your kitchen to stand out and make a bold statement, using bright colors is the way to do it. You can't do this in every kitchen but if yours is one that already has a whimsical look, adding colors can be a great idea.

The clean and neat kitchen - Some kitchens are a mess, with the refrigerator full of magnets, things hung all over the walls, and the counter tops packed with utensils. This kind of a hectic kitchen is not for everyone and you might prefer one that has more elegance and style. If you want a kitchen that you can bring anyone to and not be embarrassed, the clean and neat kitchen is for you. Minimal things on the walls, the counter tops should be clean, and everything should be put away in it's proper spot: which is in a cupboard!

Old style vintage kitchen - Do you remember hanging out in your Grandmother's kitchen. Those were the good old days when a kitchen had character and it didn't have all sorts of high tech gadgets. If you want your own vintage kitchen, think about doing away with all the things that look modern and replacing them with old school ones instead. For instance, you could add something like a mortar and pestle set. Simplicity should be the theme for this kind of kitchen.

Kitchen for chefs - If you like the clean white look of the kind of restaurant kitchen you see in the movies, you can try to model yours accordingly. This kind of kitchen accentuates the basics and when you walk in, it is clear this kitchen is for cooking! Usually there is a lot of stainless steel used for the cabinets, sinks, and stove tops and this is one of the more unique kitchen design ideas.

Restaurant style kitchen - At some restaurants, you can get a glimpse of part of even all of the kitchen. This is because it is stylishly decorated and it serves as part of the atmosphere of the restaurant. If you have an open kitchen that blends in with your dining room or eating area, you can try to duplicate this look. Think more about what things look like than how well they work because style is the most important aspect of this kitchen.

The casual kitchen - This is the kitchen that is the favorite room in the house where everyone ends up spending a lot of time. Comfort is the key here as all the chairs and stools must be a pleasure to sit on. The kitchen colors must be soft on the eyes and you need to have it big enough for people to congregate. This type of kitchen is designed as the gathering spot both for guests when you have parties and for everyday use.
